Formerly Healthy Reach, Healthy Learners is an initiative of Providence Hospitals that was established in 1992 to improve health in children to promote better educational outcomes. This faith and community-based nonprofit tackles core issues surrounding poverty to give future generations the self-efficacy to lift themselves from the cycle. Beginning in the inner city of Columbia, Healthy Learners has now expanded to five program sites and serves 148 schools in South Carolina. Wrap-around services include vision and dental care, hearing evaluations, prescription assistance, counseling, transportation to medical appointments, and care for other health concerns. Children served by Health Learners have shown improved academic performance, an increase in health status, and an increase in self-esteem.
In partnership with ADCO, Elephant Ear Design created a mobile responsive site that is intuitively designed for ease of navigation while still having a pleasing and branded aesthetic. The homepage of the site showcases a few of the stories that bring the nonprofit’s mission to life for site visitors and potential donors. Social Media buttons across the top of the page allow visitors to further interact with Healthy Learners, and a front and center “Donate Today” button drives potential donors to the site’s donation page with contact information for the organization’s Director of Development.
Side navigation clearly features each of the Healthy Learners Program sites, and within each Program Site page visitors can easily access eligibility information, Program Partners, Friends, School Nurse’s Handbook, and local contact information specific to the Program Site. While visiting a specific program site, news specific to that site feeds below the navigation options for that site to the right of the page. This interconnectedness keeps the site visitor patched in with their Program Site of choice.
